"en": "Dataset of Beaver creates early successional hotspots for water beetles\nWater beetles in Evo 2019\n\nAuthors: Petri Nummi, Wenfei Liao, Juliette van der Schoor, John Loehr\n\nThe dataset was utilised in the paper entitled “Beaver creates early successional hotspots for water beetles” by Petri Nummi, Wenfei Liao, Juliette van der Schoor, John Loehr published on Biodiversity and Conservation 30, 2655–2670 (2021). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10531-021-02213-8 \n\nStudy sites\nThe data was collected at Evo (61°12′ N, 25°07′ E) in southern Finland. Lakes of this area are oligotrophic, and relatively small (0.1–49.5 ha). All these habitats contain fish. North American beavers (Castor canadensis) inhabit the study area and create flowages by damming existing ponds but they sometimes also dam creeks. Within the landscape, beavers move from one lake to another every three years on average, resulting in abandoning old sites and creating new beaver habitat patches. \n\nTo study how water beetles responded to beaver-created succession, we selected four types of ponds having five replicates in each category: \n(1) New Beaver Ponds: newly formed ponds between 2 and 4 years old that have raised water level through damming; \n(2) Old Beaver Ponds: ponds which beavers may or may not be currently present in, but the beaver constructed dam still functions and maintains a raised water level (7–33 years old); \n(3) Former Beaver Ponds (Abandoned beaver ponds): with no current beaver presence and which have previously had raised water level due to a beaver constructed dam, but the dam has been breached and the water level has dropped; \n(4) Never Engineered Ponds: ponds which have not encountered raised water level through beaver damming during the last 50 years.\n\nSampling methods\nWe employed activity traps without bait to sample water beetles. The traps consisted of 1L glass jars with a funnel of 10 cm at the large end and 2.3 cm at the narrow end. At each location, we placed 10 traps approximately 1 m from the shoreline where the water was at least 30 cm of depth. The traps were placed horizontally on the bottom and attached to the surrounding vegetation to keep them in place. We measured the depth of each trap (cm) and estimated the percentage of vegetation of the sampling locations, then we averaged these parameters for each pond. After 48 h, traps were emptied by sieving the content using a sieve with 1 mm mesh. Adult beetles were identified to the species level.\n\nDataset\nIn the dataset (file “Raw_data_Evo_Beaver_water_beetles_2019.xlsx”) are two sheets. The sheet “StudySites” gives basic information on the sampled ponds. The age of beaver ponds and the years of the abandoned ponds are given. The coordinates of all ponds are given. For example, Arabiankorpi locates at 61.2132 N, 25.0928E. The sampling date means the date of traps being retrieved.\n\nThe sheet “Water_beetle_raw_data” gives all the observations of water beetles from each trap. In total, 26 Dytiscidae species, two Noteridae species, and two Haliplidae species were caught during the trapping. The code of Pond is in line with the sheet “StudySites”. For example, Pond “N1” means the site Arabiankorpi. The code of Trap stands for each trap. For example, “N1.1” means the first trap of New Beaver Pond No.1 (Arabiankorpi). “SpeciesRichness” means the species richness of all water beetle adults in a trap, including Dytiscidae, Noteridae, and Haliplidae in our case. “Abundance” means the abundance of all water beetle adults in a trap. “Type” means the categories of the ponds. “NEW” means new beaver ponds; “OLD” means old beaver ponds; “ABANDONED” means former beaver ponds; “NEVER” means never engineered ponds."

We conclude that using beavers as a tool, or imitating their way of flooding, can be beneficial in wetland restoration if beaver population densities are monitored to ensure the availability of newly colonizable sites.</jats:p>",

Vuosina 1995-2001 kerätyt näytteet edustavat pääasiassa vuosiluokkia 1991-1995, joita tuettiin polttomerkittyjen kesänvanhojen kuhanpoikasten istutuksilla. Suomunäytteissä on tieto siitä, onko yksilö istutettu (U-merkki) vai luonnonvarainen. Vanhempaa (kerätty 1962, 1984-1986) ja tuoreempaa (kerätty 2001-2003) suomuaineistoa on käytetty mm. kasvuvertailuihin ja ganeettisiin analyyseihin.\n\nLohjanjärven kuhasaaliin ikärakenteen ja merkittyjen istutuskuhien vuosiluokkakohtaisen osuuden arviointi. Kasvuvertailut, Geneettinen analyysi kuhaistutusten vaikutuksista."

"fi": "Vuosina 1983 - 1988 istutettiin kesänvanhoja kuhanpoikasia 10 ennestään kuhattomaan järveen (Sulkavanjärvi, Suur-Säyneinen, Hanhijärvi, Ylä-Enonvesi, Nerosjärvi, Kuohijärvi, Ormajärvi, Arimaa, Hormajärvi ja Puujärvi). Vuosina 1985-1995 näistä järvistä kerättiin kirjanpitokalastajien toimesta yhteensä noin 2000 kuhan suomunäytettä (0-644/järvi). Lisäksi näytteitä kerättiin niistä kahdesta kuhapopulaatiosta, joista istutuskalat olivat peräisin, Vihdin Averiasta ja Vanajanselästä.\n\nIstutusten tuottaman kuhasaaliin rakenteen arviointi, kasvun vertailu eri istutusjärvissä ja niissä järvissä, joista istutusmateriaali oli peräisin (Averia, Vanajanselkä)"

"en": "This resource will be available for download in Kielipankki – the Language Bank of Finland\n\nSuomi eilen ja tänään 'Finland, Yesterday and Today' was written as a manuscript by Kaisa Häkkinen and Seppo Zetterberg for translation into numerous minority Finno-Ugric languages in Russia. In the late 1990s, the M.A. Castrén Society commissioned this manuscript as a information package for providing minority-language information on Finnish history, culture and statehood in 1995. One of the ideas behind this project was to provide primary information that was not available through any other channel – give minority language a meaningful use as a source of new information. Thus, translations were made into the minority languages Komi-Zyrian, Udmurt, Meadow Mari, Erzya and Moksha. The translators were linguists who had spent time in Finland and therefore had personal experience of Finland as well. "en": "The data were collected for a multi-technique provenance analysis of the late Eocene-early Oligocene aeolian dust sequence in Ulantatal, western Inner Mongolia, China. The data include detrital zircon U-Pb ages and detrital rutile trace element geochemistry from five samples corresponding to aeolian deposition at 34.2 (ZR2), 33.1 (ZR1), 32.5 (ZR3), 30.9 (ZR6), and 29.3 (ZR7) Ma. ZR7 was a composite sample (11 combined samples between 29.5–28.8 Ma, mean 29.3 Ma). The detrital mineral analyses were conducted at the Geological Survey of Finland using a Nu Plasma AttoM single collector ICP-MS (Nu Instruments Ltd., Wrexham, UK) connected to an Analyte Excite 193 ArF laser ablation system (Photon Machines, San Diego, USA). The detrital rutiles were analysed for Li, Mg, Al, Si, P, Ca, Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Sn, Sb, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Pb, Th, and U. The grain sizes of analysed detrital zircons and rutiles were 20–90 μm. \nThe data set also includes measurements of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) from 362 specimens corresponding to depositional ages between 34.8 Ma and 26.8 Ma. AMS was measured at the Ivar Giaever Geomagnetic Laboratory, University of Oslo and at Geological Survey of Finland with a MFK1-FA Kappabridge (AGICO Inc., Brno, Czech Republic) using a 200 A/m field at a 976 Hz frequency."

"en": "The aim of the research was to delve into the meaningfulness of such work as promotion of research integrity. The following research questions were formulated:\n\n1) What aspects of the role of research integrity promoter are meaningful? Why?\n\n2) To what changes does research integrity promotion as meaningful work lead?\n\nTo answer these research questions, a qualitative research approach was employed using individual semi-structured interviews for data collection. The population of interest were national research integrity promoters: national ombudspersons for research integrity (coded as OMB), representatives for research integrity/misconduct from research funding organizations (RFO) and representatives from national research integrity networks (RIN) in European countries.\n\nPurposive sampling method was used to select informants. To identify potential informants, we used website of European Network of Research Integrity Offices (http://www.enrio.eu/) and official websites of target organizations; in addition, snowball method was used to identify potential informants who corresponded to sampling criteria but were not part of the ENRIO membership. At the first stage, 32 potential informants were identified; due to missing contact information or irrelevance of activities as defined in sampling criteria, only 21 informants were invited to participate in the research. Overall, 10 national research integrity promoters (7 females and 3 males; all hold PhD degree and were or currently are part of academia) consented to take part in the research: 5 national ombudspersons for research integrity, 3 representatives for research integrity/misconduct from research funding organizations and 2 representatives from national research integrity networks.\n\nSemi-structured questionnaire (interview guide) consisting of five key topics (self-identity, goals, impediments to meaning, enablers to meaning, rewards for meaning-making) and the closing section was used. Interviews were conducted remotely. The interview language was English.\n\nEach interview was audio-recorded, transcribed, and anonymized. Average length of interview was 53 minutes; average non-anonymized interview transcript contained 6851 words.\n\nEach transcript was validated by two researchers for data accuracy and clarification of inaudible responses; anonymization of each transcript was validated by two researchers and a respective informant. Due to uniqueness of the national status of informants, two informants asked to change their initial consent to disclose anonymized transcript (i.e., they agreed on the use of their interview transcripts for data analysis but not on granting open access to them)."

"en": "Considering world-wide interest in prevalent research malpractice at higher education institutions, we focus on the role of European national research integrity promoters (ombudspersons, research funding organizations, research integrity networks) who play a role at the forefront of bringing systemic change. Given the constraints of the role of research integrity promoters, we strive to grasp the meaningfulness of their work. To accomplish that, we employ a qualitative research approach and use individual semi-structured interviews with 10 national research integrity promoters. Employing reflexive applied thematic analysis, we discuss our findings in light of the structural symbolic interactionist approach and sensemaking theory. We conclude that encapsulated in challenging prerequisites of the national research integrity promotion work, the meaningfulness of such work emerges through integrating research integrity in all aspects of academic life to entail indispensable systemic changes in academia."

"en": "National Forest Inventory (NFI) is a forest monitoring system based on systematic sampling on all land. Nowadays, NFI is repeated in every 5 years. These data are from the 11th NFI cycle (2009-2013). One fifth of the NFI11 field plot clusters are permanent, 4 fifths temporary. These data contains only the temporary field plots measured in forest land or poorly produtive forest land. Another restriction of the data is that field plots at the border of two land use or forest stand borders are excluded. The data contains few selected variables describing the forest stand and volume of growing stock (by species group) measured at the plot location. Because the data are only a sub-sample of the full NFI data it cannot be used for calculating unbiased forest resource statistics. These selected data may be used for example as a ground truth data for remote sensing or for validation of map data.",

Nykyään VMI toistetaan viiden vuoden välein. Nämä tiedot ovat 11. VMI-syklistä (2009-2013). VMI11:sta koealoista viidesosa on pysyviä, ja neljäviidesosaa tilapäisiä. Nämä tiedot sisältävät vain tilapäisten koealojen mittaukset metsämaalla tai huonosti tuottavalla metsämaalla. Rajoituksena aineistolle on, että kahden maankäytön tai metsikön rajalla olevat koealat on jätetty pois. Rekisteriin ilmoittautuneista 17:llä oli jatkojalostustoimintaa ja näistä yrityksistä neljä oli kokonaan erikoistunut luomun jatkojalostukseen. Haastattelussa selvitettiin luomun osuus yritysten tuotannossa ja jatkojalostettujen tuotteiden valikoima, sekä kartoitettiin esteet ja mahdollisuudet luomun osuuden kasvattamiseksi. \n\nTutkimuksessa tunnistettiin ja tavoitettiin 23 ammattikeittiötä Hämeen alueella. Näistä ammattikeittiöstä 17 (74%) osallistui haastattelututkimukseen. Luomun käyttöä julkisissa ammattikeittiöissä selvitettiin tuotettavien annosten kokonaislukumäärillä, luomuraaka-aineiden osuudella tuoteryhmittäin ja raaka-aineiden saatavuudella. Tämän lisäksi kartoitettiin esteet ja kehittämistarpeet luomun osuuden kasvattamiseksi ammattikeittiöissä. Tutkimuksen osallistuneissa ammattikeittiöissä suosittiin ensisijaisesti kotimaisia tuotteita ja lähiraaka-aineita. Vain harvoilla ammattikeittiöillä on tehty periaatepäätös luomun käytöstä."

"en": "Dataset includes isotopic values of soil water and groundwater samples collected from an experimental plot located at the Kenttärova hilltop, within the Pallas catchment. The locations of sampling profiles within the plot are displayed in EP_sketch.pdf image. \n\nThe samples were collected between June 2019 and September 2020. The experimental plot was irrigated with 163.6 mm of deuterated water (mean weighted 2H value of 79.38 ± 5.3 ‰) during a 30-hour period in late August 2019 (Aug 27 16:00 h – Aug 29 22:00 h). \n\nSuction lysimeter soil water samples were obtained, if any water was available, from 2 profiles (S2 and S3) and three depths (5, 30 and 60 cm) by applying 600 kPa of suction. The samples were collected biweekly during 2019 and 2020 summer seasons, every 2 days during the 2020 snowmelt and hourly during the 30-hour irrigation period. \n\nSoil water samples from pan lysimeters, located at 35 cm depth in profiles S2 and S3, were collected concurrently with suction lysimeter soil water samples. Hand-held vacuum pump was used to extract the samples from 1 L sample collecting bottles.\n\nGroundwater samples were obtained from a 1.3 m deep groundwater well, located in profile S2. Groundwater was only sampled during the 30-hour irrigation period.\n\nSamples from surface water accumulated in ponds were collected opportunistically during the 30-hour irrigation period.\n\nBulk soil water isotopic signal was obtained from the soil cores that were collected 4 times during the irrigation period, and 3 more times afterwards (September 2019, April 2020 and June 2020). Two replicate cores were collected each time, and all cores were sampled at 5 cm increments down to a 50 cm soil depth and at 10 cm increments from a 50–100 cm depth. \n\nDirect equilibration method was used to measure the isotopic composition of bulk soil water, using a cavity ring-down spectroscopy analyzer (Picarro L2140-i model, Picarro Inc., Santa Clara, CA, USA). The isotopic composition of liquid soil water samples (from groundwater, suction and pan lysimeters) was analyzed on the same Picarro device. "en": "Mixed data production:\r\n\r\nSub-study 1 investigated the role of technology in adult migrant language and late literacy education in Finland. The dataset included an online pre-pandemic survey targeted at Finnish language and literacy teachers and four in-service teacher interviews conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic in late 2020. \r\n\r\nSurvey data of teachers (written data in Finnish) was produced in November 2019. The online teacher survey was motivated to create an indicative overview of the current situation of adult migrant second language and literacy education in Finland. The survey’s interests were the (practical) use of technical equipment in teaching as well as the (pedagogical) use of digital methods and applications. Interview data consists of four written in-service teachers' interview transcripts in Finnish. Four teachers were individually interviewed once. These unstructured, conversational interviews were remotely conducted in Finnish, via Zoom (September-October 2020) to inform teachers about the next sub-study. Duration of transcribed interviews is ca. 140 mins (approx. 19,000 words in total).\r\n\r\nIn sub-study 2, in-service Finnish language and literacy teachers tested, evaluated and re-designed a research version of the literacy support app 'Professori Pörröpää ja Lukukupla' developed by the AllRead research project team at the University of Jyväskylä. This subdataset included interview data of these three teachers working with adult migrants with limited/interrupted formal education experience (10 written interview transcripts in Finnish, including screenshots from the recorded video interviews), individual teachers were interviewed online via Zoom three to four times between September 2020 to May 2021. Three induction interviews were non-structured, seven evaluation interviews were semi-structured. Duration of transcribed interviews ca. 10 h 30 mins.",
