"en": "Abstract Background Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) affects embryonic development, causing a variable fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) phenotype with neuronal disorders and birth defects. We hypothesize that early alcohol-induced epigenetic changes disrupt the accurate developmental programming of embryo and consequently cause the complex phenotype of developmental disorders. To explore the etiology of FASD, we collected unique biological samples of 80 severely alcohol-exposed and 100 control newborns at birth. Methods We performed genome-wide DNA methylation (DNAm) and gene expression analyses of placentas by using microarrays (EPIC, Illumina) and mRNA sequencing, respectively. To test the manifestation of observed PAE-associated DNAm changes in embryonic tissues as well as potential biomarkers for PAE, we examined if the changes can be detected also in white blood cells or buccal epithelial cells of the same newborns by EpiTYPER. To explore the early effects of alcohol on extraembryonic placental tissue, we selected 27 newborns whose mothers had consumed alcohol up to gestational week 7 at maximum to the separate analyses. Furthermore, to explore the effects of early alcohol exposure on embryonic cells, human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) as well as hESCs during differentiation into endodermal, mesodermal, and ectodermal cells were exposed to alcohol in vitro. Results DPPA4, FOXP2, and TACR3 with significantly decreased DNAm were discovered—particularly the regulatory region of DPPA4 in the early alcohol-exposed placentas. When hESCs were exposed to alcohol in vitro, significantly altered regulation of DPPA2, a closely linked heterodimer of DPPA4, was observed. While the regulatory region of DPPA4 was unmethylated in both control and alcohol-exposed hESCs, alcohol-induced decreased DNAm similar to placenta was seen in in vitro differentiated mesodermal and ectodermal cells. Furthermore, common genes with alcohol-associated DNAm changes in placenta and hESCs were linked exclusively to the neurodevelopmental pathways in the enrichment analysis, which emphasizes the value of placental tissue when analyzing the effects of prenatal environment on human development. Conclusions Our study shows the effects of early alcohol exposure on human embryonic and extraembryonic cells, introduces candidate genes for alcohol-induced developmental disorders, and reveals potential biomarkers for prenatal alcohol exposure."

"en": "This dataset contains material volumes (m3), material masses (kg), and material intensities (kg/m2) for representative buildings from 45 residential building cohorts in Finland. These data are presented per material and in total, aggregated on three hierarchical levels on the correspondingly named sheets in the OpenDocument Spreadsheet (ODS) file: the entire building (data_building), distinguished between vertical building levels (data_building_level), and distinguished between building parts (data_building part). Further details on the data are provided on the description sheet in the same file.\r\n\r\nThe cohorts are based on building type, main frame material, main façade material, and construction decade. Each cohort is represented by one inventoried building. All buildings are located in the city of Vantaa, Finland, with the exception of the 1940s and 1950s houses, which are based on type-planned houses and thus have no specific location.\r\n\r\nThe data are primarily based on digitized construction documents obtained from the Vantaa building inspection authority’s archives through the purchase portal Lupapiste Kauppa (https://kauppa.lupapiste.fi/) The 1940s and 1950s type-planned houses’ drawings are from the National Archives of Finland."

"en": "Abstract Background Infertility is common and in vitro fertilization (IVF) is a widely used treatment. In IVF the need increases and the effectiveness and appropriateness decrease by age. The purpose of this study was to describe allocation of resources for IVF by women's age, socioeconomic position, area of residence and treatment sector (public vs. private) and to discuss how fairly the IVF resources are allocated in Finland. Methods Women who received IVF between 1996 and 1998 (N = 9175) were identified from the reimbursement records of the Social Insurance Institution (SII). Information on IVF women's background characteristics came from the Central Population Register and the SII, on treatment costs from IVF clinics and the SII, and on births from the Medical Birth Register. The main outcome measures were success of IVF by number of cycles and treated women, expenditures per IVF cycles, per women, per live-birth, and per treatment sector, and private and public expenditures. Expenditures were estimated from health care visits and costs. Results During a mean period of 1.5 years, older women (women aged 40 or older) received 1.4 times more IVF treatment cycles than younger women (women aged below 30). The success rate decreased by age: from 22 live births per 100 cycles among younger women to 6 per 100 among older women. The mean cost of a live birth increased by age: compared to younger women, costs per born live birth of older women were 3-fold. Calculated by population, public expenditure was allocated most to young women and women from the highest socioeconomic position. Regional differences were not remarkable. Conclusion Children of older infertile women involve more expense due to the lower success rates of IVF. Socioeconomic differences suggest unfair resource allocation in Finland."

"en": "Abstract Background Epidemiological and experimental evidence has linked chronic inflammation to cancer aetiology. It is unclear whether associations for specific inflammatory biomarkers are causal or due to bias. In order to examine whether altered genetically predicted concentration of circulating cytokines are associated with cancer development, we performed a two-sample Mendelian randomisation (MR) analysis. Methods Up to 31,112 individuals of European descent were included in genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analyses of 47 circulating cytokines. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) robustly associated with the cytokines, located in or close to their coding gene (cis), were used as instrumental variables. Inverse-variance weighted MR was used as the primary analysis, and the MR assumptions were evaluated in sensitivity and colocalization analyses and a false discovery rate (FDR) correction for multiple comparisons was applied. Corresponding germline GWAS summary data for five cancer outcomes (breast, endometrial, lung, ovarian, and prostate), and their subtypes were selected from the largest cancer-specific GWASs available (cases ranging from 12,906 for endometrial to 133,384 for breast cancer). Results There was evidence of inverse associations of macrophage migration inhibitory factor with breast cancer (OR per SD = 0.88, 95% CI 0.83 to 0.94), interleukin-1 receptor antagonist with endometrial cancer (0.86, 0.80 to 0.93), interleukin-18 with lung cancer (0.87, 0.81 to 0.93), and beta-chemokine-RANTES with ovarian cancer (0.70, 0.57 to 0.85) and positive associations of monokine induced by gamma interferon with endometrial cancer (3.73, 1.86 to 7.47) and cutaneous T-cell attracting chemokine with lung cancer (1.51, 1.22 to 1.87). These associations were similar in sensitivity analyses and supported in colocalization analyses. Conclusions Our study adds to current knowledge on the role of specific inflammatory biomarker pathways in cancer aetiology. Further validation is needed to assess the potential of these cytokines as pharmacological or lifestyle targets for cancer prevention."

"en": "Abstract Background Floor dust is commonly used for microbial determinations in epidemiological studies to estimate early-life indoor microbial exposures. Resuspension of floor dust and its impact on infant microbial exposure is, however, little explored. The aim of our study was to investigate how floor dust resuspension induced by an infant’s crawling motion and an adult walking affects infant inhalation exposure to microbes. Results We conducted controlled chamber experiments with a simplified mechanical crawling infant robot and an adult volunteer walking over carpeted flooring. We applied bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequencing and quantitative PCR to monitor the infant breathing zone microbial content and compared that to the adult breathing zone and the carpet dust as the source. During crawling, fungal and bacterial levels were, on average, 8- to 21-fold higher in the infant breathing zone compared to measurements from the adult breathing zone. During walking experiments, the increase in microbial levels in the infant breathing zone was far less pronounced. The correlation in rank orders of microbial levels in the carpet dust and the corresponding infant breathing zone sample varied between different microbial groups but was mostly moderate. The relative abundance of bacterial taxa was characteristically distinct in carpet dust and infant and adult breathing zones during the infant crawling experiments. Bacterial diversity in carpet dust and the infant breathing zone did not correlate significantly. Conclusions The microbiota in the infant breathing zone differ in absolute quantitative and compositional terms from that of the adult breathing zone and of floor dust. Crawling induces resuspension of floor dust from carpeted flooring, creating a concentrated and localized cloud of microbial content around the infant. Thus, the microbial exposure of infants following dust resuspension is difficult to predict based on common house dust or bulk air measurements. Improved approaches for the assessment of infant microbial exposure, such as sampling at the infant breathing zone level, are needed."

"en": "Tampere University of Technology (TUT) Sound Events 2018 - Ambisonic, Reverberant and Synthetic Impulse Response Dataset This dataset consists of simulated reverberant first order Ambisonic (FOA) format recordings with stationary point sources each associated with a spatial coordinate. The dataset consists of three sub-datasets with a) maximum one temporally overlapping sound events, b) maximum two temporally overlapping sound events, and c) maximum three temporally overlapping sound events. Each of the sub-datasets has three cross-validation splits, that consists of 240 recordings of about 30 seconds long for training split and 60 recordings of the same length for the testing split. For each recording, the metadata file with the same name consists of the sound event name, the temporal onset and offset time (in seconds), spatial location in azimuth and elevation angles (in degrees), and distance from the microphone (in meters). The sound events are spatially placed within a room using the image source method. The room size chosen was 10x8x4 meter with reverberation time per octave band of [1.0, 0.8, 0.7, 0.6, 0.5, 0.4] s and 125 Hz–4 kHz band center frequencies. The isolated sound events were taken from the DCASE 2016 task 2 dataset. This dataset consists of 11 sound event classes such as Clearing throat, Coughing, Door knock, Door slam, Drawer, Human laughter, Keyboard, Keys (put on a table), Page turning, Phone ringing and Speech. The sound events are randomly placed in a spatial grid with 10-degree resolution in full azimuth and [-60 60) degree elevation angles. Additionally, the sound events are placed at a random distance of at least 1 meter away from the microphone. The license of the dataset can be found in the LICENSE file. The rest of the nine zip files consists of datasets for a given split and overlap. For example, the ov3_split1.zip file consists of the audio and metadata folders for the case of maximum three temporally overlapping sound events (ov3) and the first cross-validation split (split1). Within each audio/metadata folder, the filenames for training split have the 'train' prefix, while the testing split filenames have the 'test' prefix. This dataset was collected as part of the 'Sound event localization and detection of overlapping sources using convolutional recurrent neural network' work."

"en": "Tampere University of Technology (TUT) Sound Events 2018 - Ambisonic, Reverberant and Real-life Impulse Response Dataset This dataset consists of real-life first order Ambisonic (FOA) format recordings with stationary point sources each associated with a spatial coordinate. The dataset was generated by collecting impulse responses (IR) from a real environment using the Eigenmike spherical microphone array. The measurement was done by slowly moving a Genelec G Two loudspeaker continuously playing a maximum length sequence around the array in circular trajectory in one elevation at a time. The playback volume was set to be 30 dB greater than the ambient sound level. The recording was done in a corridor inside the university with classrooms around it during work hours.The IRs were collected at elevations −40 to 40 with 10-degree increments at 1 m from the Eigenmike and at elevations −20 to 20 with 10-degree increments at 2 m. The dataset consists of three sub-datasets with a) maximum one temporally overlapping sound events, b) maximum two temporally overlapping sound events, and c) maximum three temporally overlapping sound events. Each of the sub-datasets has three cross-validation splits, that consists of 240 recordings of about 30 seconds long for training split and 60 recordings of the same length for the testing split. For each recording, the metadata file with the same name consists of the sound event name, the temporal onset and offset time (in seconds), spatial location in azimuth and elevation angles (in degrees), and distance from the microphone (in meters). The isolated sound events were taken from the urbansound8k dataset. This dataset consists of 10 sound event classes such as air_conditioner, car_horn, children_playing, dog_bark, drilling, enginge_idling, gun_shot, jackhammer, siren, and street_music. We do not consider the air_conditioner and children_playing sound events. Further, we only include the sound event examples marked as foreground in the dataset. We used the splits 1, 8 and 9 provided in the urbansound8k as the three CV splits. These splits were chosen as they had a good number of examples for all the chosen sound event classes after selecting only the foreground examples. During the sound scene synthesis, we randomly chose a sound event example and associated it with a random distance among the collected ones, azimuth and elevation angle. The sound event example was then convolved with the respective IR for the given distance, azimuth and elevation to spatially position it. The metadata.zip folder consists of the license and the metadata for the complete dataset. The rest of the nine zip files consists dataset for given split and overlap. For example, the wav_ov3_split1_30db.zip file consists of training and testing recordings for the case of maximum three temporally overlapping sound events (ov3) for the first cross-validation split (split1). Within each audio folder, the filenames for training split have the 'train' prefix, while the testing split filenames have the 'test' prefix. This dataset was collected as part of the 'Sound event localization and detection of overlapping sources using convolutional recurrent neural network' work. "en": "Tampere University of Technology (TUT) Tietotalo Ambisonic Impulse Response This dataset consists of impulse responses (IR) from a real environment using the Eigenmike spherical microphone array. The recordings were done in a fairly large spaced corridor inside the university (Tietotalo building) with classrooms around it. The IR acquisition was done using a maximum length sequence (MLS). The measurement was done by slowly moving a Genelec G Two loudspeaker continuously playing the MLS around the Eigenmike in a circular trajectory. The playback volume was set to be 30 dB greater than the ambient sound level. The IRs were collected at elevations −40 to 40 with 10-degree increments at 1 m from the Eigenmike and at elevations −20 to 20 with 10-degree increments at 2 m. The moving-source IRs were obtained by a freely available tool from CHiME challenge which estimates the time-varying responses in STFT domain by forming a least-squares regression between the known measurement signal and the far-field recording independently at each frequency. The IR for any azimuth within one trajectory can be analyzed by assuming block-wise stationarity of acoustic channel. The CHiME IR estimation tool was applied independently on all 32 channels of the Eigenmike. For the dataset creation, we analyzed the DOA of each time frame using MUSIC and extracted IRs for azimuthal angles at 10° resolution (36 IRs for each elevation). The IR file is in .mat format and can be read both in Matlab and Python. The details of the IR file are as following, Size: (2, 9, 1025, 36, 4, 32) = (distance_wrt_mic, elevation_wrt_mic, FFT, azimuth_wrt_mic, blocks, channels). where, distance_wrt_mic = two distances (1m and 2m) elevation_wrt_mic = 9 elevation angles (-40:10:40) at distance 1m, and 5 elevations angles (-20:10:20) at distance 2m. azimuth_wrt_mic = 36 azimuth angles (-180:10:180) for all distance-elevation combination The IRs were extracted assuming block-wise stationarity (four blocks) for each frequency bin (1025 bins). During synthesis, after convolving the IR with a sound event, the 32 channel audio will have to be transformed to Ambisonic format using the transformation matrix of Eigenmike. This dataset was collected as part of the 'Sound event localization and detection of overlapping sources using convolutional recurrent neural network' work, more details about this IR dataset can be found in this work. "en": "Background: The etiology of prostate cancer (PCa) involves environmental and genetic factors. Understanding the role of medication use on PCa risk may clarify the pathophysiological changes and mechanisms in development of cancer. Methods: This study investigated PCa risk in relation to overall use of anti-hypertensive drugs and those with specific mechanisms of action. The study cohort (78,615 men) was linked to the prescription database to obtain information on medication use during 20-year follow-up. Information was obtained on PCa diagnoses, causes of deaths, and for a sub-set on B.M.I. and use of non-prescription drugs. Time-dependent drug use variables hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using Cox regression analyses. Results: Use of antihypertensive drugs slightly increased PCa risk (HR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.11–1.22). The risk increase was clearest for metastatic PCa (HR = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.14–1.62). ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, and diuretics were all separately associated with a small excess risk (HR = 1.10, 95% CI = 1.01–1.19, HR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.06–1.21, and HR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.07–1.27, respectively). None of the other groups showed a clear association with PCa risk. Conclusions: The use of antihypertensive drugs was associated with increased prostate cancer risk. Similar risk association for multiple drug groups suggests that the findings may not reflect a direct medication effect, but may be due to underlying hypertension."
