"en": "According to Gloger’s rule animal colouration is expected to be darker in wetter and warmer climates. Such environmental clines are predicted to occur in colour polymorphic species and to be shaped by selection if colour morphs represent adaptations to different environments. We studied if the distribution of the colour polymorphic tawny owl (Strix aluco) morphs (a pheomelanic brown and a pale grey) across Europe follow the predictions of Gloger’s rule and if there is a temporal change in the geographical patterns corresponding to regional variations in climate change. We used data on tawny owl museum skin specimen collections. First, we investigated long-term spatiotemporal variation in the probability of observing the colour morphs in different climate zones. Second, we studied if the probability of observing the colour morphs was associated with general climatic conditions. Third, we studied if weather fluctuations prior the finding year of an owl explains colour morph in each climate zone. The brown tawny owl morph was historically more common than the grey morph in every studied climate zone. Over time the brown morph has become rarer in the temperate and Mediterranean zone, whereas it has first become rarer but then again more common in the boreal zone. Based on general climatic conditions winter and summer temperature were positively and negatively associated with proportion of brown morph, respectively. Winter precipitation was negatively associated with proportion of brown morph. The effects of five-year means of weather on the probability to observe a brown morph differed between climate zones, indicating region dependent effect of climate change and weather on tawny owl colouration. To conclude, tawny owl colouration does not explicitly follow Gloger’s rule, implying a time and space dependent complex system shaped by many factors. We provide novel insights in how the geographic distribution of pheomelanin-based colour polymorphism is changing."

"en": "Dataset for training pix2pix model to predict nuclei from brightfield images of MDA-MB-231. This dataset contains 1600 brightfield and 1600 nuclei images. The nuclei were labeled using sir-DNA (Cytoskeleton). Cells were imaged live (37 °C, 5% CO2) using a Nikon Eclipse Ti2-E microscope (Nikon) equipped with an sCMOS Orca Flash4.0 camera (Hamamatsu) and controlled by the NIS-Elements software (Nikon, v 5.11.01). MDA-MB-231 cells were imaged using a 20× Nikon CFI Plan Apo Lambda objective (NA 0.75), either 1 frame per minute for 2 hours or 1 frame every 5 minutes for 17 hours. In these experiments, a camera binning of 2 × 2 was used."

In total, ABOships-PLUS contains 33,227 annotated objects across these categories, including four types of ships. Several key changes and improvements have been made to ABOships-PLUS: Object Size Filtering: In ABOships-PLUS, a filtering process was applied to exclude very small objects, specifically those with an occupied pixel area less than 16^2x16^2 pixels. This filtering ensures that the dataset primarily consists of more discernible maritime objects, contributing to improved data quality. Superclass Aggregation: A notable transformation in ABOships-PLUS is the grouping of objects into four superclasses based on their distinct visual characteristics. This superclass aggregation facilitates the use of both transfer learning and learning from scratch, making the dataset more versatile for various machine learning applications. Semantic Relevance: The categorization into superclasses in ABOships-PLUS was guided by semantic relevance, with human supervision. The objective was to create more meaningful superclasses, both from a semantic and visual perspective, enhancing the dataset's utility for maritime object detection research. Format Transition: A significant change occurred in the data format. ABOships-PLUS adopts the COCO format for object detection: https://cocodataset.org/#format-data. This format transition enhances compatibility with a broader range of machine learning frameworks and tools, in contrast to the original ABOships dataset, which used CSV format. "en": "This data set is related to the article ‘Tricentennial trends in spring ice break-ups on three rivers in Northern Europe’ which was published in The Cryosphere in 2022. The data set includes the ice-off dates (the first day the river is ice-free) for Aura River in Turku (60°45’N, 22°27’E) over the period 1749–2020 and the break-up (the date when the ice started breaking up and/or moving) dates for Kokemäki River in Pori (61°48’N, 21°79’E) over the period 1793–2020. Both rivers are in Finland. The data set has been developed for climate research purposes. The aim was to create two series with homogenized break-up dates with regard to site and event. The series will be updated if new observations are obtained. See the Readme_txt for more information about the data sets."

"en": "MDA-MB-231 or U2OS cells stably expressing clover-ERK-KTR were seeded on fibronectin-coated (1 µg /ml) Ibidi 8-well slides (Ibidi) 1 day before imaging. Four hours before imaging, the medium was supplemented with 250 nM sir-DNA (Cytoskeleton) and 25 mM HEPES (Sigma). Cells were then imaged live (37 °C, 5% CO2) using a Nikon Eclipse Ti2-E microscope (Nikon) equipped with an sCMOS Orca Flash4.0 camera (Hamamatsu) and controlled by the NIS-Elements software (Nikon, v 5.11.01). MDA-MB-231 cells were imaged using a 20× Nikon CFI Plan Apo Lambda objective (NA 0.75), either 1 frame per minute for 2 hours or 1 frame every 5 minutes for 17 hours. In these experiments, a camera binning of 2 × 2 was used. This dataset consists of 20 videos."

"en": "Our understanding of the community assembly processes acting on non-indigenous species (NIS), as well as the relationship with native species is limited, especially in marine ecosystems. To overcome this knowledge gap we here develop a trait-based approach based on the functional distinctiveness metric to assess niche overlap between NIS and native species, using high-resolution data on benthic invertebrate communities in the Baltic Sea. Our results show that NIS retain a certain degree of similarity with native species, but display one or a few singular unique traits (e.g., bioturbation ability). Furthermore, we demonstrate that community assembly processes, including both environmental filtering and limiting similarity affect NIS establishment, but that their effects may be highly context dependent, as illustrated by pronounced spatial patterns in distinctiveness. Finally, our trait-based approach provides a generic framework applicable to other areas and organisms, to better understand and address biological invasions."
