"en": "Spatial regulation of angiogenesis is important for the generation of functional engineered vasculature and the Notch ligands Jag1 and Dll4 are known to regulate endothelial sprouting. In this project, <em>in vitro </em>and <em>in silico </em>models were used to analyze the ability of micropatterned Jag1 and Dll4 to spatially control the sprouting process. Dll4 patterns, but not Jag1 patterns, were found to elicit spatial control and computational simulations suggest different timing of Notch activation by Jag1 and Dll4 to be the reason for their distinct effects. The more potent spatial control of sprouting by Dll4 in comparison to Jag1 could be exploited as a tool in vascular engineering and regenerative medicine. This dataset contains data from <em>in vitro</em> experiments on endothelial sprouting with human endothelial cells and micropatterned Jag1 and Dll4 ligands."

Images were taken every 5 s at 37 C on an Airyscan microscope, using a 40x objective. MYO10 puncta were tracked using TrackMate using the custom Stardist detector and the simple LAP tracker (Linking max distance=1 micron, Gap-closing max distance=2 microns, Gap-closing max frame gap=2 micron). Briefly, this model was trained for 200 epochs on 11 paired image patches [image dimensions: (512, 512), patch size: (512,512)] with a batch size of 2 and a mean absolute error (MAE) loss function, using the StarDist 2D ZeroCostDL4Mic notebook. In CellTracksColab, we conducted a dimensionality reduction analysis employing Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP). The UMAP settings were as follows: number of neighbors (n_neighbors) set to 10, minimum distance (min_dist) to 0, and number of dimensions (n_dimension) to 2. Subsequently, activated primary mouse CD4+ T cells were cleansed and suspended in L-15 media, enriched with 2 mg/mL D-glucose. These T cells were then placed into the chamber slides and incubated for 20 minutes. Post-incubation, a gentle wash was performed to eliminate all unattached cells. The imaging process was conducted using a 10x phase contrast objective at 37°C, utilizing a Zeiss Axiovert 200M microscope equipped with an automated X-Y stage and a Roper EMCCD camera. Time-lapse imaging was executed at intervals of 1 minute over 10 minutes, employing SlideBook 6 software from Intelligent Imaging Innovations. Cells were automatically tracked using StarDist, directly implemented within TrackMate. The StarDist model was trained using ZeroCostDL4Mic and is publicly available on Zenodo. This model generated excellent segmentation results on our test dataset (F1 score > 0.99). In TrackMate, the StarDist detector custom model (score threshold = 0.41 and overlap threshold = 0.5) and the Simple LAP tracker (linking max distance = 30 µm; gap closing max distance = 15 µm, gap closing max frame gap = 2 frames) were used. In CellTracksColab, we conducted a dimensionality reduction analysis employing Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP). "en": "This data forms part of the TUNU Programme at UiT–The Arctic University of Norway and is the first contribution focused on benthic invertebrates in this Programme. The TUNU-Programme received permits from the Government of Greenland, Ministry of Fisheries, Hunting and Agriculture–document ID: C-17-129 and C-15-17. The data consists of epibenthic megafaunal invertebrates that were sampled from R/V Helmer Hanssen (UiT–The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø), as part of the ongoing international TUNU-Programme (TUNU means East Greenland in Greenlandic) during the TUNU-VI Expedition in August 2015 and the TUNU-VII Expedition in September 2017. The dataset covers areas of the Northeast Greenland coastal and shelf areas such as Bessel Fjord, Dove Bugt, Belgica Bank and other shelf locations, and further east along the shelf break and upper continental slope. A total of 18 locations were sampled with a total of 33 trawl samples collected over a depth range covering from 65 to 1011 m. A full description of sampling methods can be found here: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00300-020-02733-z The data sets include; epibenthic abundance (years 2015 & 2017) and biomass (2017). Abundance estimates were standardized to number of individuals (ind.) 1000 m−2 and biomass estimates were standardised to gram wet weight (g ww) 1000 m−2. Trait information was collected from the Arctic Trait Database (https://www.univie.ac.at/ arctic traits/, Accessed: April 2023) and the fuzzy coding approach applied. If traits were not available from the Arctic Trait Database at the lowest taxonomic rank, the literature was reviewed to retain the highest taxonomic resolution possible, or the trait was given a score of zero in order not to bias results of trait-analyses. Environmental data is also included for all stations (both years) as one file and the variables include latittude, longitude, bottom water temperature (C), bottom salinity (PSU), oxygen concentration (ml L−1), and turbidity (FTU)."

"en": "To date, mate choice studies have mostly focused on establishing which mates are chosen or how the choices are performed. Here, we combined these two approaches by empirically testing how latency to mate is affected by various search costs, variation in mate quality and female quality in the sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus). Our results show that females adjust their mating behaviour according to the costs and benefits of the choice situation. Specifically, they mated sooner when access to males was delayed and when the presence of other females presented a mate sampling cost. We also found a positive link between size variation among potential mating partners and spawning delay in some (but not all) experimental conditions. By contrast, we did not find the number of available males or the females' own body size (‘quality’) to affect mating latency. Finally, female mating behaviour varied significantly between years. These findings are notable for demonstrating that (i) mate sampling time is particularly sensitive to costs and, to a lesser degree, to variation among mate candidates, (ii) females' mating behaviour is sensitive to qualitative rather than to quantitative variation in their environment, and (iii) a snapshot view may describe mate sampling behaviour unreliably."

"en": "The global decline in pollinators has partly been blamed on pesticides, leading some to propose pesticide-free farming as an option to improve pollination. However, herbivores are likely to be more prevalent in pesticide-free environments, requiring knowledge of their effects on pollinators, and alternative crop protection strategies to mitigate any potential pollination reduction. Strawberry leaf beetles (SLB) Galerucella spp. are important strawberry pests in Northern Europe and Russia. Given that SLB attack both leaf and flower tissue, we hypothesized pollinators would discriminate against SLB-damaged strawberry plants (Fragaria vesca, cultivar 'Rügen'), leading to lower pollination success and yield. In addition we screened the most common commercial cultivar 'Rügen' and wild Swedish F. vesca genotypes for SLB resistance to assess the potential for inverse breeding to restore high SLB resistance in cultivated strawberry. Behavioral observations in a controlled experiment revealed that the local pollinator fauna avoided strawberry flowers with SLB-damaged petals. Low pollination, in turn, resulted in smaller more deformed fruits. Furthermore, SLB-damaged flowers produced smaller fruits even when they were hand pollinated, showing herbivore damage also had direct effects on yield, independent of indirect effects on pollination. We found variable resistance in wild woodland strawberry to SLB and more resistant plant genotypes than the cultivar 'Rügen' were identified. Efficient integrated pest management strategies should be employed to mitigate both direct and indirect effects of herbivory for cultivated strawberry, including high intrinsic plant resistance."

"en": "Previous work demonstrates that working-memory (WM) updating training results in improved performance on a letter-memory criterion task, transfers to an untrained n-back task, and increases striatal dopamine (DA) activity during the criterion task. Here, we sought to replicate and extend these findings by also examining neurochemical correlates of transfer. Four positron emission tomography (PET) scans using the radioligand raclopride were performed. Two of these assessed DAD2 binding (letter memory; n-back) before 5 weeks of updating training, and the same two scans were performed post training. Key findings were (a) pronounced training-related behavioral gains in the letter-memory criterion task, (b) altered striatal DAD2 binding potential after training during letter-memory performance, suggesting training-induced increases in DA release, and (c) increased striatal DA activity also during the n-back transfer task after the intervention, but no concomitant behavioral transfer. The fact that the training-related DA alterations during the transfer task were not accompanied by behavioral transfer suggests that increased DA release may be a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for behavioral transfer to occur."

"en": "In many species, the natural distribution of material resources important for reproduction can profoundly impact reproductive success among individuals and, hence, the opportunity and intensity of sexual selection. Here, we report on a field-based experiment investigating the effects of nest aggregation on sexual selection in a fish, the sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus). We found that the distribution of potential nests (sparse versus aggregated nest treatments) affected patterns of nest colonization and reproductive success. Specifically, in the treatment with aggregated nesting resources, a greater proportion of nests remained unoccupied by sand goby males. Although the size of nesting males did not differ between treatments, eggs accumulated more rapidly when nests were sparsely distributed. We found that the opportunity for selection decreased over time with the accumulation of eggs in the nests in both the aggregated and sparse treatments. Moreover, the effect of male size on reproductive success was influenced by an interaction between nest distribution and time, with the selection gradient being highest right after nest colonization when nests were aggregated, while the opposite pattern was observed in the sparse nest treatment. Such findings highlight the vital role that environmental and social factors can play in determining the importance of male phenotypic traits (in this case, male size). More broadly, our results also underscore how the natural distribution of resources, both in space and time, can impact the strength of sexual selection acting on wild animal populations."

"en": "Recent studies have shown that some eyespots of prey divert the strikes of predators, increasing the likelihood of prey escape. However, little is known about what makes eyespots effective divertive (deflective) prey marks. The size of eyespots varies much both between and even within taxa. Yet, whether size is important for the divertive function of eyespots is unknown. Furthermore, eyespots have often been described as highly contrasting, but the effects of contrast on the divertive function of eyespots has never been tested experimentally. Using artificial prey and the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) as a model for predator cognition and behaviour, we tested the importance of size as well as internal contrast for the divertive effect of eyespots. We independently increased the internal contrast and size of eyespots and found that both increased the divertive effect. The effect of size was significant over all four subsequent prey presentations, whereas the effect of contrast decreased after the initial presentations. These results suggest that the size and contrast of divertive marks are probably shaped by selection imposed by predation. We also discuss the involvement of predation in the seasonal and ontogenic plasticity of eyespots found in some taxa."
