"en": "Effects of climate change on natural ecosystems can be mediated by ecological processes, but also by rapid evolutionary adaptations and/or non-heritable trait changes in organisms. So far, most studies testing the importance of inter- vs. intraspecific changes for how communities and their functioning responds to climate change are either short-term laboratory experiments in highly controlled (artificial) environments, or long-term field surveys suffering from lack of experimental manipulation. Here, we quantified how community composition and functioning has changed in response to long-term warming, including the potential direct and indirect effects via immediate and delayed physiological, non-heritable plastic, ecological, evolutionary and eco-evolutionary responses. We used a space-for-time approach, sampling sites in an artificially heated basin and a nearby area to quantify how >30 years of experimental warming in situ affects benthic grazer communities and traits of grazer taxa, as well as their contribution to a key ecosystem function: grazing on filamentous algae. The community composition shifted with warming, because a non-native species was highly common, and taxa with higher mobility, became more common in the heated areas compared to the control sites. Warming altered community functioning but the underlying mechanisms varied between traits: increased metabolism was caused by intraspecific trait change, while increased grazing rate was mainly driven by species turnover. Our results suggest that both population- and community-level processes mediate the responses of natural communities to long-term environmental change, and that the ongoing warming of coastal waters is likely to alter the functioning of key marine ecosystems."

"en": "StarDist Model: The StarDist model was generated using the ZeroCostDL4Mic platform (Chamier et al., 2021). This custom StarDist model was trained for 300 epochs using 46 manually annotated paired images (image dimensions: (1024, 1024)) with a batch size of 2, an augmentation factor of 4 and a mae loss function. The StarDist “Versatile fluorescent nuclei” model was used as a training starting point. Key python packages used include TensorFlow (v 0.1.12), Keras (v 2.3.1), CSBdeep (v 0.6.1), NumPy (v 1.19.5), Cuda (v 11.0.221). The training was accelerated using a Tesla P100GPU. The model weights can be used in the ZeroCostDL4Mic StarDist 2D notebook or in the StarDist Fiji plugin. StarDist Training dataset: Paired microscopy images (fluorescence) and corresponding masks Microscopy data type: Fluorescence microscopy (SiR-DNA) and masks obtained via manual segmentation (see https://github.com/HenriquesLab/ZeroCostDL4Mic/wiki/Stardist for details about the segmentation) Cells were imaged using a 20x Nikon CFI Plan Apo Lambda objective (NA 0.75) one frame every 10 minutes for 16h. Cell type: MDA-MB-231 cells and BT20 cells File format: .tif (16-bit for fluorescence and 8 and 16-bit for the masks)"

"en": "Benthic species and communities are linked to pelagic zooplankton through life-stages encompassing both benthic and pelagic habitats and through a mutual dependency on primary producers as a food source. Many zooplankton taxa contribute to the sedimentary system as benthic eggs. Our main aim was to investigate the nature of the population level biotic interactions between and within these two seemingly independent communities, both dependent on the pelagic primary production, while simultaneously accounting for environmental drivers (salinity, temperature and oxygen conditions). To this end we applied multivariate autoregressive state-space models to long (1966–2007) time-series of annual abundance data, comparing models with and without interspecific interactions, as well as models with and without environmental variables included. We were not able to detect any direct coupling between sediment-dwelling benthic taxa and pelagic copepods and cladocerans on the annual scale, but the most parsimonious model indicated that interactions within the benthic community are important. There were also positive residual correlations between the copepods and cladocerans potentially reflecting the availability of a shared resource or similar seasonal dependence, whereas both groups tended to correlate negatively with the zoobenthic taxa. The most notable single interaction within the benthic community was a tendency for a negative effect of Limecola balthica on the amphipods Monoporeia affinis and Pontoporeia femorata, which can help explain the observed decrease of amphipods due to increased competitive interference."

"en": "Plastic and selective mechanisms govern parental investment adjustments to predation threat. We investigated the relative importance of plasticity and selection in risk-taking propensity of incubating female common eiders Somateria mollissima facing unprecedented predation in SW Finland, Baltic Sea. Using a 12-year individual-based dataset, we examined within- and among-individual variation in flight initiation distance (FID), in relation to predation risk, nest detectability, individual traits and reproductive investment (NFID = 1009; Nindividual = 559). We expected females nesting in riskier environments (higher predation risk, lower nest concealment) to mitigate environmentally-imposed risk by exhibiting longer FIDs, and females investing more in current reproduction (older, in better condition or laying large clutches) to display shorter FIDs. The target of predation - adult or offspring - affected the mechanisms adapting risk-taking propensity; females plastically increased their FID under higher adult predation risk, while risk-avoiding breeders were predominant on islands with higher nest predation risk. Risk-taking females selected thicker nest cover, consistent with personality-matching habitat choice. Females plastically attenuated their antipredator response (shorter FIDs) with advancing age, and females in better body condition were more risk-taking, a result explained by selection processes. Future research should consider predator type when investigating the fitness consequences of risk-taking strategies."
