Osana hanketta Aalto-yliopiston Rakennetun ympäristön mittauksen ja mallintamisen instituutti MeMo:ssa testattiin puvun mallintamista fotogrammetrialla, strukturoidun valon skannerilla sekä laserkeilaimella. "en": "The methods used to collect and preprocess this dataset have been reported in detail in Juola J., Hovi A., Rautiainen M., 2022. A spectral analysis of stem bark for boreal and temperate tree species. Ecology and Evolution. DOI:10.1002/ece3.8718\r\n\r\nThe dataset includes stem reflectance spectra of standing dead trees for the species of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). We measured hemispherical-directional reflectance factors (HDRF) of stem samples. The data were measured using a Specim IQ imaging spectrometer. The measurements were taken from the northern side of the stem at breast height (1.3 m), and the image acquisition distance was 20 cm. The imaging spectrometer operates in the visible and near-infrared wavelength region (400–1000 nm). The measurements were made in the municipality of Rovaniemi, Finland. We measured 13 standing dead Scots pine trees, accounting to a total of 13 unique stem samples. One sample refers to a hyperspectral reflectance image taken of a single standing dead tree stem (at 1.3 m height). The 13 mean spectral signatures (presented in this dataset) were calculated for each sample by averaging the HDRF values over all pixels per wavelength. The measurements were conducted in the beginning of August 2022. All measurements were made under diffuse illumination conditions and the images were taken in perpendicular view-angle to the standing stem. The dataset includes 1) one tabular file that contains all 13 mean reflectance spectra, and 2) a supportive document that has images of the individual standing dead trees and RGB visualizations of the measured hyperspectral reflectance images.\r\n\r\nThe spreadsheet (.csv) is organized as follows: first two rows that start with hashtag (#) contain comments for citing, first column \"tree_species\" (standing_dead_tree_pinus_sylvestris) indicates the standing dead tree species, second column \"id\" (K1-K13) indicates the unique stem id's for which images can be found in the supportive document, and the subsequent columns \"wl397.32\"-\"wl1003.58\" indicate the measured HDRF value at that wavelength. The encoding of the csv file is UTF-8. \r\n\r\nThe supportive document (.pdf) contains the dataset description given here, but also images of the standing dead trees taken in the forest and their corresponding RGB visualizations of the measured hyperspectral reflectance images. The Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) are given for each stem in the figure descriptions."

"en": "A dataset of impulse responses collected in the variable acoustics laboratory Arni at Acoustics Lab of Aalto University, Espoo, Finland.\r\n\r\nIRs of 5342 configurations of sound absorption in Arni are included in the dataset. Each of them were measured using an omnidirectional sound source and 5 sound receivers. For each configuration, 5 IRs were captured. Schlecht, and Vesa Välimäki, in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America\r\n\r\nThe work leading to producing the dataset and related research was supported by the Nordic Sound and Music Computing Network---NordicSMC, NordForsk project number 86892.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nHow to read the files in the dataset:\r\n\r\nThe general style of file naming is:\r\nIR_numClosed_NumberOfReflectivePanels_numComb_CombinationNumber_mic_ReceiverNumber_sweep_SweepNumber\r\nfor example, for 1 reflective panel, combination 87, IR obtained from 3rd out of 5 sweeps recorded by microphone number 2, the filename is:\r\nIR_numClosed_1_numComb_87_mic_2_sweep_3.wav\r\n\r\nThe dataset was divided into several files due to its total size. The files included in each .zip file are indicated in its name.\r\n\r\nIf some of the sound files are missing, e.g. for a certain combination and microphone there are 4 IR recordings instead of 5, it means that the sweep was discarded in the pre-processing phase due to non-stationary noise.\r\nRead more: Karolina Prawda, Sebastian J. "en": "We identified variables controlling stream nitrogen concentrations and fluxes, and how they have changed over time, by synthesizing 20 time series ranging from 5 to 51 years of data collected from forest and grassland dominated watersheds across Europe, North America, and East Asia and across four climate types (tropical, temperate, Mediterranean, and boreal) using the International Long-Term Ecological Research Network. We found declining trends in bulk ammonium and nitrate deposition, with ammonium contributing significantly more to atmospheric nitrogen deposition over time. Among sites, there were significant positive relationships between (1) precipitation and stream ammonium and nitrate fluxes and (2) atmospheric nitrogen inputs and stream nitrogen concentrations and fluxes. There were no significant relationships between air temperature and stream nitrogen export. Our long-term data shows that although nitrogen deposition is declining over time, atmospheric nitrogen inputs and precipitation remain the main predictors for nitrogen exported from forested and grassland watersheds. Overall, we also demonstrate that long-term monitoring provides understanding of ecosystems and biogeochemical cycling that would not be possible with short-term studies alone. "en": "The freshwater ecosystems all over the world are degrading, such that maintaining environmental flow (EF) in river networks is critical to their preservation. The relationship between streamflow alterations and, respectively, EF violations, and freshwater biodiversity is well established at the scale of stream reaches or small basins (~100 km²). However, it is unclear if this relationship is robust at larger scales even though there are large-scale initiatives to legalize the EF requirement and EFs have been used in assessing a planetary boundary for freshwater. Therefore, this study intends to evaluate the relationship between EF violation and freshwater biodiversity at large basin scale (median area = 19,600 km2), globally-aggregated scales, and at freshwater ecoregions, and test the prevailing assumption of scalability of this relationship. Four EF violation indices (severity, frequency, the probability to shift to violated state, and probability to stay violated) and nine independent freshwater biodiversity indicators (calculated from observed biota data except one empirically derived from streamflow deviation) were used for correlation analysis. EF violations showed an inverse relationship with the streamflow-derived biodiversity indicator (MSAhy) at the level 5 HydroBASIN scale. However, no statistically significant negative relationship between environmental flows and freshwater biodiversity was found at the global or ecoregion scale except between the streamflow-derived biodiversity indicator (MSAhy) and all EF violation indices. While our results thus suggest that streamflow and EF may not be the main determinants of freshwater biodiversity, they do not preclude the existence of relationships with more holistic EF methods (e.g. including water temperature, water quality, intermittency, connectivity, etc.) or with other biodiversity data or metrics."

Details on the samples, the decay test, and the image collection parameters can be found in the publication.\r\n\r\nThe “Sample IDs and mass losses.cvs” file contains the sample ID and mass loss due to decay of each sample in the dataset. The “C puteana.mat” and “R. placenta.mat” files contain the near infrared imaging data of samples exposed to the fungus Coniophora puteana and the fungus Rhodonia placenta, respectively, organised into cell arrays of sample IDs and corresponding image files. To generate the image files, a region of interest of 551 x 384 pixels was selected from the raw image files to produce an image that contains the sample surrounded by background. The spectral data were then converted to reflectance and corrected using the calibration reflectance target values."

"en": "This data includes small and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS, WAXS) intensities measured for Norway spruce (Picea abies) wood.\r\n\r\nThe experiments were done in perpendicular transmission geometry, with the wood fiber axis roughly vertical and the radial direction of the wood tissue parallel to the X-ray beam, using a Xenocs Xeuss 3.0 C SAXS/WAXS device and Cu K-alpha radiation (wavelength 1.542 Å). The scattering patterns were recorded using an EIGER2 R 1M detector (pixel size 75 µm). The wood sample was measured first in wet state (saturated with water; \"Wet\"), and then equilibrated at different relative humidities (RH) in the following order: 95% (\"RH95_1st\"), 85% (\"RH85\"), 70% (\"RH70\"), 50% (\"RH50_1st\"), 20% (\"RH20\"), 10% (\"RH10\"), 50% (\"RH50_2nd\"), 95% (\"RH95_2nd\"). The sample-to-detector distance was 0.4139 m in SAXS, and 0.1528 m for the first 4 conditions (until \"RH70\") and 0.1525 m for the remaining 5 conditions in WAXS. Beam center (in detector pixels) was at x=540.6, y=667.0 (except y=635.0 in \"RH70\") in SAXS and x=1540, y=1521 in WAXS.\r\n\r\nFor each of the 9 moisture conditions, files corresponding to 3 different processing steps are provided:\r\n\r\n\r\n\t\"_bgsub_saxs.txt\" and \"_bgsub_waxs.txt\" are ASCII files that contain the normalized and background-subtracted detector images (intensity in units mm^-1) corresponding to SAXS and WAXS, respectively. Pixels to be masked have the value \"nan\".\r\n\t\"_bgsub_saxs_pol90.txt\" and \"_bgsub_waxs_pol90.txt\" contain azimuthally regrouped images (90 bins in azimuthal angle) based on \"_bgsub_saxs.txt\" and \"_bgsub_waxs.txt\", respectively. PNG image files \"_bgsub_saxs_pol.png\" and \"_bgsub_waxs_pol.png\" are provided for reference.\r\n\t\"_bgsub_pol90_ibg.txt\" and \"_bgsub_waxs_pol90_vert_ibg.txt\" contain the equatorial and meridional anisotropic intensities, respectively, which were obtained from the azimuthally regrouped images by subtracting the isotropic scattering from the equatorial or meridional intensity (sector width 25°) at each value of the scattering vector q. The equatorial anisotropic intensities from SAXS and WAXS were merged by scaling the SAXS intensity, and the meridional anisotropic intensity is provided for the WAXS range only. "en": "Yeasts in the lager brewing group are closely related and consequently do not exhibit significant genetic variability. Here, an artificial Saccharomyces cerevisiae × Saccharomyces eubayanus tetraploid interspecies hybrid was created by rare mating, and its ability to sporulate and produce viable gametes was exploited to generate phenotypic diversity. Four spore clones obtained from a single ascus were isolated, and their brewing-relevant phenotypes were assessed. These F1 spore clones were found to differ with respect to fermentation performance under lager brewing conditions (15°C, 15 °Plato), production of volatile aroma compounds, flocculation potential and temperature tolerance. One spore clone, selected for its rapid fermentation and acetate ester production was sporulated to produce an F2 generation, again comprised of four spore clones from a single ascus. Again, phenotypic diversity was introduced. In two of these F2 clones, the fermentation performance was maintained and acetate ester production was improved relative to the F1 parent and the original hybrid strain. Strains also performed well in comparison to a commercial lager yeast strain. Spore clones varied in ploidy and chromosome copy numbers, and faster wort fermentation was observed in strains with a higher ploidy. An F2 spore clone was also subjected to 10 consecutive wort fermentations, and single cells were isolated from the resulting yeast slurry. These isolates also exhibited variable fermentation performance and chromosome copy numbers, highlighting the instability of polyploid interspecific hybrids. These results demonstrate the value of this natural approach to increase the phenotypic diversity of lager brewing yeast strains."

"en": "Yeasts in the lager brewing group are closely related and consequently do not exhibit significant genetic variability. Here, an artificial Saccharomyces cerevisiae × Saccharomyces eubayanus tetraploid interspecies hybrid was created by rare mating, and its ability to sporulate and produce viable gametes was exploited to generate phenotypic diversity. Four spore clones obtained from a single ascus were isolated, and their brewing-relevant phenotypes were assessed. These F1 spore clones were found to differ with respect to fermentation performance under lager brewing conditions (15°C, 15 °Plato), production of volatile aroma compounds, flocculation potential and temperature tolerance. One spore clone, selected for its rapid fermentation and acetate ester production was sporulated to produce an F2 generation, again comprised of four spore clones from a single ascus. Again, phenotypic diversity was introduced. In two of these F2 clones, the fermentation performance was maintained and acetate ester production was improved relative to the F1 parent and the original hybrid strain. Strains also performed well in comparison to a commercial lager yeast strain. Spore clones varied in ploidy and chromosome copy numbers, and faster wort fermentation was observed in strains with a higher ploidy. An F2 spore clone was also subjected to 10 consecutive wort fermentations, and single cells were isolated from the resulting yeast slurry. These isolates also exhibited variable fermentation performance and chromosome copy numbers, highlighting the instability of polyploid interspecific hybrids. These results demonstrate the value of this natural approach to increase the phenotypic diversity of lager brewing yeast strains."
